The purpose of Early Childhood Evaluations is to determine readiness for preschool or kindergarten and to identify any significant developmental or behavioral factors that might need to be addressed.
For the preschool readiness assessment, the Mullen Scales of Early Learning and/or other developmental measures will be administered to your child. The assessment takes approximately one hour. Subtests may include visual reception, fine motor, and receptive and expressive language.
For the kindergarten readiness assessment, instruments which assess cognitive abilities, pre-academic skills, and fine motor skills will be administered. Informal assessment of social and emotional readiness will also be made.
These assessments are not meant to provide diagnoses but rather identify developmental strengths and needs.
Who Can Benefit from a Preschool/Kindergarten Readiness Assessment?
Your child may benefit from this assessment if you question whether he/she is ready socially, emotionally, or academically for preschool or kindergarten. Furthermore, sometimes parents of children with late birthdays struggle with the decision to enter them in school or hold them back a year. This assessment may help make that decision.
What Does a Preschool/Kindergarten Reading Assessment Entail?
- The examiner will greet you and your child in the waiting room. You may accompany your child to the testing room, where the examiner will then spend a few minutes interacting with your child to build rapport, ease any anxiety, and to allow for a more comfortable separation.
- If your child is uncomfortable separating from you, you may stay in the testing room with him/her for the entirety of the evaluation. If your child separates easily, parents may choose to observe the evaluation via video recording. Parents should identify this request prior to the appointment so that CRG can set up the equipment.
- Your child and the examiner will sit at a small table and testing materials will be presented in a reciprocal fashion.
- Short breaks may be taken depending on the motivation, attention and energy presented by your child.
- After the testing is completed, you will be asked to wait a few minutes in the waiting room and the examiner will score the testing.
- Once the testing is scored, the examiner will briefly (5 or 10 minutes) go over the results with you. Results may also be shared on another day if preferred.
A report will be generated to inform you how your child performed during the evaluation. It will include background information, observation and test results.
If concerns are noted, the examiner will inform you after the evaluation and schedule a brief follow-up appointment to discuss any concerns and give recommendations. If you are interested in further evaluation for your child, you may schedule an appointment through CRG and additional fees will be charged.
